News From Cleansing Service Group
Dealing With Waste Materials
News Item Posted on: 14 May 2012

In recent times environmental awareness has spread throughout many industries but despite this cleaning and greening the creation of waste cannot be avoided.

Cleansing Service Group (CSG) is expert in the treatment and recovery of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes including chemicals, paints, adhesives, inks and contaminated liquids. The company’s expertise will be illustrated on Stand B12 at Surfex Plus (NEC 29-30 May 2012) where experts will be on hand to discuss the company’s Total Waste Management (TWM) service.

The introduction of a TWM programme ensures recycling is maximised and the volume of waste going to landfill is minimised. In many instances the programme can also save a company money.

An additional advantage of the TWM service operated by CSG is that its network of depots means much of the waste can be dealt with locally thereby minimising the transport of materials over long distances. This is a much more environmentally sustainable way of handling the waste because it reduces long distance haulage and therefore effectively reduces the company’s carbon footprint.

The display on the Stand will also illustrate the emphasis CSG places on ensuring it achieves full compliance with the very strict environmental and technical regulations governing the UK waste industry.

CSG is one of the UK waste industry’s fastest growing companies operating a nationwide network of depots and treatment facilities including the UK’s largest specialist hazardous waste treatment and recovery facility at Cadishead, Manchester.

Visitors to Stand B12 will have the opportunity to talk through all aspects of Total Waste Management with CSG experts.

For further information contact: Mike Wilson, CSG, Cadishead. Tel: 0161 7752644.

X-Rite Press Release
X-Rite Announces it will be Acquired
News Item Posted on: 12 April 2012

X-Rite SurfexPlus 2012 Stand: E2

We are pleased to update you on an exciting development for X-Rite.  Yesterday we announced that we have reached an agreement to be acquired by Danaher, a leading science and technology company that designs, manufactures, and markets innovative products and services to professional, medical, industrial, and commercial customers.

We firmly believe that this transaction offers a compelling opportunity for X-Rite and all of our key stakeholders.  Danaher is a first-rate global company known for its leading-edge innovation.  Danaher's global scale and resources will provide X-Rite with access to new markets and Danaher's complementary technologies, enabling us to become an even more valuable partner to you, our customers.

Upon completion of the transaction, X-Rite will operate as a stand-alone company in Danaher's Product Identification group, and the existing X-Rite management team will continue to hold key senior leadership positions at the Company.  X-Rite will continue to serve you under our X-Rite, Pantone and other leading brands.

While we are very excited about today's news, this announcement is just the first step in completing this combination.  The transaction is still subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the second quarter of 2012.  Until that time, we will continue to operate as independent companies, and for us, it is business as usual.

Rest assured, meeting your needs remains X-Rite's number one priority and you will continue to receive the same industry-leading products and high levels of service that you have come to expect from us.

We will do our best to keep you informed as we move toward completing this transaction.  If you have additional questions about this acquisition please contact your local sales representative.

We value our relationship with you and look forward to continuing to serve you well into the future.  Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Vic Stalam

Potter Group Logistics backs call for less red tape
News Item Posted on: 03 January 2012

Date: December 2011

Potter Group Logistics’ managing director Matthew Lamb has supported the Chemical Business Association’s (CBA) call for a reduction in the legislative burden which threatens to undermine the industry’s ability to compete and to offer a cost-effective service.

The call comes in response to the recent statement from the CBA’s chairman Dr Neville Prior which highlights the industry’s concern over attempts by government bodies with regulatory powers – such as the Health and Safety Executive, Home Office and Department for Transport – to raise additional revenue from new or extended charges.

He commented: “Potter Group Logistics has invested heavily over the years in equipment, systems and training to ensure we conform to legislation covering the handling and storage of chemicals and hazardous products, which represents a far greater commercial commitment than for non-hazardous products. This includes a £2m investment by the company this autumn in a new specialist warehouse for global speciality chemicals company Johnson Matthey. But like others in the industry we see our business and our ability to maintain a competitive service threatened by yet more costly legislation”.

“We were encouraged by the government’s promise to apply a ‘one-in, one-out rule’ to help stem the rise in red tape, but the proposals now being tabled such as the Health and Safety Executive’s plans to raise revenue through its ‘ Fee for Intervention’ scheme run counter to this policy. Given the plethora of new legislation over the past decade we believe that an actual reduction in red tape is the least we can expect, to ease the administrative burden on businesses.”

“In the present economic climate the health of SMEs such as Potter Group Logistics to generate revenue, employ people and pay taxes is vital to the nation’s economy.  Any additional burden places us all at risk, even more so at a time when rising fuel costs, lack of demand and severe competition make it ever harder to grow a successful business.”

“Despite the current uncertainty we will continue to invest where the case is justified and we can see a fair return.  At the same time, as CBA members we intend to give our wholehearted support to the Association’s efforts in opposing any additional burden on the industry either from additional legislation or extra costs.”

has become a favoured replacement for lead as a through drier. However, compared with lead it is expensive, can be slower to dry and can also lead to loss-of-dry problems.

Strontium driers can offer the following benefits :
  • drying times which are on the whole better than zirconium and broadly comparable to lead
  • less toxic than zirconium driers and significantly less toxic than lead driers
  • no OEL associated with strontium
  • no loss of dry with strontium
  • a cost effective alternative to lead and zirconium

To learn more about replacing zirconium with strontium please email Cornelius industrial team on sales@cornelius.co.uk. If
you are buying other drier products click here for more information on our full range

Johnson Matthey signs five-year contract with Potter Group Logistics
News Item Posted on: 25 October 2011

Global speciality chemicals company Johnson Matthey has signed a five-year agreement with Potter Group Logistics to occupy 50,000ft² of storage and distribution space at the Group’s Ripon distribution centre.  The Group’s long experience in handling highly specialised products and in dealing with chemicals was a vital factor in the decision.  The Group is investing around £2 million in the project and infrastructure including new Flexi trucks, and the facility will have its own dedicated entrance and access separate from other buildings on site.

The facility was completed in August 2011, with Johnson Matthey taking possession at the start of 2012.  It will be used to store some 7,500 Tes of drums, Octoboxes and KATPACS™ of catalysts, with small batch stock stored on racking and fast movers block stacked.  Potter Group Logistics will ship materials from the Johnson Matthey catalyst manufacturing plant at Clitheroe into Ripon with its fleet of MAN units that use environmentally friendly low emission EGR engine technology.

A dedicated 5,000ft² zone will house a repacking rig to handle repacking from drums into other containers, with the process managed by Johnson Matthey’s SAP system for pick, pack, product re-labelling, re-banding and configuration. The building has additional space to enable the company to handle spikes in demand and Potter Group Logistics has already obtained planning permission for a 40,000ft² extension if required.

Johnson Matthey signs five-year contract with Potter Group Logistics

Reflecting both Johnson Matthey’s and Potter Group Logistics’ commitment to minimising their carbon footprint, the facility incorporates a number of the latest energy efficient technologies.  The warehouse lighting supplied by Inspired Lighting operates at a very low level, turning quickly to full power when any movement is detected.  Using power only when required and with an operational life of up to 30,000 hours, the system will make significant energy savings compared with more traditional methods.

The roof design makes maximum use of natural lighting to further reduce the energy demands of internal lighting and can be retrofitted with solar panels when they can be economically justified.  The latest high standards of building insulation materials ensure that internal heating levels are kept to a minimum.  Excavated soil from the construction will be used to create a new on-site tree planting zone.

Potter Group Logistics currently stores around 2,500 pallets of raw material for the Johnson Matthey manufacturing plant in its top tier COMAH centre in Knowsley, Merseyside, and together with the decision to store at the Ripon distribution centre, Johnson Matthey has demonstrated its commitment and faith in Potter Group Logistics as a partner for its long-term growth.

Surfex Plus 2012-September News Letter
News Item Posted on: 21 September 2011

Surfex Plus 2012 is the only exhibition in the British Isles dedicated to all of the following industries - coatings, inks, adhesives, sealants, corrosion and construction chemicals.

This exciting new face of Surfex Plus will be held for the first time at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) Birmingham on 29th and 30th May 2012.

Surfex Plus will encompass the following sectors; Chemicals and Raw Materials, Adhesives and Sealants, Test Equipment, Manufacturing Plant, Suppliers of Protective Coatings, Paint Application and Surface Preparation Equipment.

The exhibition is supported by professional partners throughout these sectors and in particularwe welcome the support of the British Coatings Federation (BCF), British Adhesives and Sealants Association (BASA), Chemical Business Association (CBA), European Resin Manufacturers Association (ERMA), British Colour Makers Association (BCMA) and the European Federation of Construction Chemicals (EFCC). Surfex Plus supports the values of these organisations and includes appropriate publicity for their activities through the news columns of Surface Coatings International.

The Surfex Plus team consulted widely with both industry leaders and their customers to ensure the best location and format was chosen to display their latest products and services to the broadest spectrum of their customer base.

Traditionally, the perception of the NEC was that it was a venue for big, multi-hall and hence would not be suitable venue for a Surfex Plus exhibition. Discussions with NEC Managed Events quickly established that their focus was on SURFEX-like exhibitions. Coupled with excellent road, rail, air links and good value local hotels, we are confident that the Pavilion at the NEC will provide a long-term home for Surfex Plus.

In addition there will, of course, be the social events of the premier industry dinner - Kaleidoscope - on the first evening as well as a half day golf tournament on the day prior to the opening of the exhibition. Both events provide an opportunity to conduct some business in a more relaxed environment.

More information on seminars and business presentations will be communicated through regular issues of this newsletter together with specific Company and Industry news.

If, as a potential exhibitor, you have not already reserved your spot, remember the best stand locations disappear early so contact the Surfex Plus team now.

To date the following companies will be represented at Surfex Plus 2012 either on their own stand or that of their distributor: Active Minerals International, ADD APT, Addi-Tec, ALFA Chemicals, Antaria, Arizona Chemicals, Asiafine, ATP, Azelis, Benasedo SpA, Binder, Blagden Specialty Chemicals, BRB Silicones, Bruchsaler Farben, BYK, Camida, Chemlink Specialities, Chinorge, Clariant Specialities, Clydebridge Chemicals, Collano AG, Collomix GmbH, Coloris Global Coloring Concept, Cornelius Group Plc, CPS Color, Cytec, Dalian Onichem, Devine Chemicals, Dominion Colour Corporation, Dorf Ketal, Dow Chemical Company, DuPont, DuPont Titanium Technologies, E H Worlee & Co (UK),  Eckart GmbH, Elementis Specialties, Etcos AG, Exakt, Fluko, Gabriel Performance Products, Gem'Innov, Grolman, Hanse Chemie, Hebron SA, Huber Engineered Materials, Huntsman, ICL Industrial Products, IGI Wax, Inmix, J I Technologies, Jiangsu Liside, J M Huber, John Godrich, Kamin Performance Minerals, Kern, Lake Chemicals &  Minerals, Laniosa SpA, Liebisch, lmerys Talc, Lubestine, Luzenac Borate, Maflon, Matsui International, Morchem, Nabaltec, NanoResins AG, Neville Chemical, Nittel UK, Nordkalk Corporation, Ofru GmbH, Omega Minerals, Omya UK, Orisil, Orrest UK, P C C Chemax, Pointer Srl, Potters Europe, QolorTech, Radiant Color NV, Refnol Resins, Rhys Davies Freight Logistics, Rhys Davies Forwarding, R J Marshall, Robert Kraemer, Rockwood Pigments, Royce International, Safic-Alcan UK, Salvis, Sapici SpA, Schill+Seilacher, Scott Bader Co, Sekisui, Shark Solutions, Shin  Etsu, Sigmund Lindner GmbH, SNCZ, StenTouch, Stort Chemicals, StortEskens, Sumitomo Bakelite, Takehara Chemical, Taminco NV, Tayca Corporation, Ter Hell, The Leneta Company, Toyal Europe, Tronox Inc, Troy Corporation, Wacker Chemie, Whitehall Recruitment, Wilfrid Smith Limited, Zanelli Srl, Zehntner.

Cornelius offers New Rheology product from Elementis Specialties
News Item Posted on: 15 September 2011

RHEOLATE® 299
Highly efficient and strongly shear thinning associative thickener
Possibly the fastest shear thinning rheology modifier of its type on the market

RHEOLATE® 299 Polyether polyurethane thickener for aqueous industrial and decorative, pigmented and clear coating systems

RHEOLATE® 299
is a highly efficient, 25% active, polyether polyurethane associative viscosity builder for the low- to mid-shear rate range.
It provides strongly shear-thinning flow behaviour which makes it ideal for spray applications including sprayed latex emulsions, dispersions, water reducible clear-coats and high gloss pigmented systems.

Thickening mechanism is pH independent:

n APE- and organotin-free

n Highly efficient

n Imparts strongly shear thinning flow behaviour

n Excellent sag resistance and anti-settling behaviour

n Good flow and levelling

n Limited influence on water sensitivity and corrosion resistance

n Excellent optical properties in the final coating system

RHEOLATE® 299 efficiently provides strongly shear thinning flow behaviour to both pigmented and clear waterborne coating systems. This results in excellent application properties, sag resistance and storage stability.
The associative thickener has limited influence on the water sensitivity and corrosion resistance of a coating. RHEOLATE® 299 is the product of choice for applications like:
- Industrial wood and wood joinery
- Industrial metal coatings
